Reel to REAL Film Series: Cultural Connections to Sexuality & Gender
“My Own Private Lower Post” (32 min) and “Kumu Hina” (75 min) bring culturally-specific stories of more fluid sexual and gender identities to light in a world full of boxes, labels and limits. “My Own Private Lower Post”tells the story of Duane Gastant' Aucoin, a two-spirited Tlingit, as he seeks to understand how his mother’s trials at Lower Post Resident School have influenced his own life. “Kumu Hina” is a powerful film about the struggle to maintain Pacific Islander culture and values within the Westernized society of modern day Hawaiʻi. It is told through the lens of an extraordinary Native Hawaiian who is both a proud and confident māhū, or transgender woman, and an honored and respected kumu, or teacher, cultural practitioner, and community leader. Juneau Pride is presenting these films in collaboration with the Alaska Native Sisterhood and Alaska Native Brotherhood, the state’s oldest Alaska Native civil rights organizations. Donations will be accepts on their behalf.
